RFID labeling as a key component in the smart tire of the future offers a number of benefits in terms of enhanced functionality, efficiency and environmental sustainability.

This is driven by an increasing interest from regulators regarding the production, maintenance and use of tires, from environmental as well as safety aspects.

There are two key advantages to identification of individual tires with RFID: improved traceability and improved maintenance.

All over world initiatives are being put into place regarding the adoption of RFID technology. Not only by tire producers themselves but also suppliers, such as VMI, which is adopting the technology due to the substantial benefits it offers in enabling Industry 4.0 and IoT.

However, RFID also provides the opportunity to redesign the whole value chain with a new business model. We are working with a large tire manufacturer and they are considering selling kilometers that a tire can run for, rather than a product. You can only do this when the tire is tagged and there is an infrastructure to trace where the tire has been.

There are also talks happening about car tax and some have suggested that drivers could pay per mile, which means the tire must be connected to the car.

After years of research and development Ferm RFID Solutions has developed various RFID tags that support the opportunities mentioned here.
