In January 2022, both of Sumitomo Rubber Industries’ (SRI) factories in China, in Changshu and Hunan, completed the transition to purchasing 100% of their electric power from renewable energy sources.

SRI is also aiming to install solar power generators in the second half of 2022, which is expected to reduce the two factories’ total annual CO2 emissions from tire manufacturing by approximately 70% when compared with the 2021 levels.

Back in December 2020 the company announced its ‘Our Philosophy’ framework, which emphasized engaging in sustainable business activities. This was followed in August 2021 by another long-term sustainability policy, ‘Driving Our Future Challenge 2050’, which aims to reduce total CO2 emissions at all SRI factories globally by 50% by 2030 compared with 2017 emissions levels. SRI aims to achieve full carbon neutrality by 2050.
