Tire industry pioneer Dr Marion G Pottinger receives award

SAE International has recognized Dr Marion G Pottinger (pictured, left) through the 2015 James M Crawford Technical Standards Board Outstanding Achievement Award. Pottinger won the Tire Technology International Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014 and is a long-standing tutor on the University of Akron’s Tire Mechanics Short Course at Tire Technology Expo.

Dr Pottinger is an engineer and owner of M’gineering. In a career spanning more than 40 years, he has worked in almost every area of the tire mechanics industry, both as a practicing engineer and a manager. He is best known for his work on the mechanics of the tire footprint with application to wear, and on tire force and moment behavior.

Dr Pottinger was also a member of the committee that prepared report TRB 286 Tires and Passenger Vehicle Fuel Economy, which was instrumental in producing the mandated tire energy consumption labeling awaiting implementation, and is widely published in a number of areas.

The James M Crawford Technical Standards Board Outstanding Achievement Award recognizes individuals for outstanding service in the technical committee activities of the society.
