Revolutionary tire sensing technology from SRI detects road conditions

LinkedIn +

Sumitomo Rubber Industries has developed a new technology, Sensing Core, which is able to detect road conditions, tire load and other information by analyzing the wheel speed signals that are generated by the rotation of the tires.

Sensing core eliminates the need for additional, dedicated sensors, reducing the cost of installation and eliminating the need for maintenance.

In addition, by analyzing and performing statistical processing of wheel speed signals, Sensing Core is able to not only detect decreases in tire air pressure, but can also estimate road conditions (slipperiness), the load applied to each tire and other information in real time.

The company plans to look into further advancements of the technology, including the ability to estimate tire damage and wear as well as the ability to collect and analyze data on the cloud for sharing this information with other vehicles.
