In response to increasing demand for tires in African markets as well as rapid economic growth throughout the continent, Sumitomo Rubber Industries is moving forward with plant investments in equipment for the production of truck and bus tires at its factory in South Africa. These investments focus on the installation of production equipment for truck and bus tires and will total approximately US$55m. The facility will start producing truck and bus tires in South Africa in July of 2018.

Until now, the South Africa factory has produced tires solely for passenger cars and light trucks. In 2014, the company announced a US$66m investment plan with the aim of enhancing the factory’s production capacity and product quality.

At present, Sumitomo Rubber South Africa supplies truck and bus tires to African markets through sales of imported tires. Now, through its new facilities, the company will be able to ensure a steady supply of locally produced tires for local markets. As a result, it will not only further strengthen its tire sales business in Africa, but also accelerate the pace of global growth and development of the Sumitomo Rubber Group.
