Tire Technology Expo 2023 has officially opened! The conference began this morning at 9am with a welcome address from Tire Technology Expo founder, Tony Robinson. Tony emphasized the use of tires as a form of data capture for tire manufacturers, particularly regarding aquaplaning, and also underlined the requirement for vehicle-to-vehicle communications and the need for integrated thinking between vehicle manufacturers and tire manufacturers.

In his presentation ‘GDSO – beyond tire identification, the reference for data transfer’, Riccardo Giovannotti, secretary general of GDSO, elaborated on this idea of the tire as a valuable asset and form of data capture. Established in January 2022 as the Global Data Service Organisation for Tyres and Automotive Components, GDSO is an international non-profit association and collaborative initiative of Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear, Michelin and Pirelli to define the outlines of tire data standards and a global technical solution for retrieving data from participating companies, based on a unique item identifier (UII), providing various stakeholders with new connected services.

Other contributors in this morning’s conference session included the European Commission’s Dalia Broggi, who spoke on the effect of tire aging and wear on wet grip performance, and Pierre Fraisse, Michelin’s vice president of technical operations, passenger car and light truck tires, who outlined the company’s approach to lifecycle analysis, a holistic approach for tire design.

Upcoming presentations today include a dive into tire road wear particles from Frederic Biesse, fellow for tire physics and modelization at Michelin; advanced techniques for the characterization of resins in rubber by Dr Jorge Lacayo-Pineda, head of expert field for materials evaluation at Continental Reifen; how different silicas alter the performance of tire treads by Zuzanna Andrzejewska, a material specialist at Apollo Tyres global R&D; and development of self-healing butyl rubber formulations by Öznur Bilge Kavacik, a compound development engineer at Brisa Bridgestone Sabanci Tyre.
