Apollo Tyres’ facility in Hungary has been awarded the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification Plus (ISCC+) certification.

The ISCC+ certification recognizes that Apollo Tyres monitors and verifies sustainability throughout its processes and supply chain, from the sourcing of raw materials to the delivery of finished products.

Rajeev Kumar Sinha, chief manufacturing officer, Apollo Tyres, said, “This certification is an important step forward as we continue to integrate sustainability deeply into our operations. It aligns perfectly with our ambitious goal of incorporating 40% sustainable raw materials – including renewable and recycled input materials – into our products by 2030.”

The ISCC certification program is a globally recognised, voluntary standard that focuses on ensuring sustainability and reducing carbon emissions in bio-based, renewable and circular raw materials.

Tyrecycle partnered with Motorsport Australia and the Shell V-Power Motorsport Park at The Bend to carry out a tire recycling pilot program on May 23-25.  The pilot project saw 168 tires recycled over the course of the three-day event in South Australia.

Tyrecycle CEO Jim Fairweather said that working with Motorsport Australia will help to raise awareness about the opportunities and benefits of adopting sustainable practices across all levels of the motorsport industry: “By having Tyrecycle’s nation-leading used tire collection and recycling expertise trackside this weekend, we’ve been able to offer racing competitors and motorsport administrators a convenient and safe way to manage end-of-life tires.

Continental’s project to enhance sustainability in smallholder natural rubber cultivation with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) has been extended by three years.

Since 2018, around 5,000 local smallholders in West Kalimantan, Borneo and Indonesia have been trained to cultivate high-quality natural rubber in line with clearly defined sustainability criteria.

By 2027, a further 1,000 smallholders are predicted to be involved in the project, which is co-funded by Continental and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The smallholders’ income has increased by an average of 27% since the start of the project.

In a letter to Congressional leadership, the US Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) has emphasized its legislative focus for 2024, advocating for policies that enhance road safety, tire innovation, environmental stewardship and domestic jobs in manufacturing.

The highlighted priorities emphasize the need for ongoing collaboration to ensure the US tire manufacturing sector is well-prepared to tackle future challenges. These include the need to update antiquated regulations that impede innovation and the importance of collective efforts to progress solutions for intricate environmental issues.

“Tires support almost every facet of our mobile society and the members of USTMA urge Congress to promptly address several high-priority issues,” said Anne Forristall Luke, USTMA president and CEO.

Tire manufacturer Continental has donated 400m2  of recycled rubber to form paving stones for a youth basketball court in Hanover-Linden in Germany.

The paving stones are made from recycled racing tires from the Extreme E electric racing series, which Continental has been supporting as a founding partner since 2019. The Extreme E tires underwent a complex manufacturing process to extract all chemical components from the tires before transforming them into paving stones that will serve as the foundation for the court.

The project BasKIDball aims to overcome social barriers with the help of sports and to create basketball courts all over Germany where young people can train together, regardless of age, origin or school.

Sustainable tire company Enso has become the first tire manufacturer to achieve the B Corporation (B-Corp) Certified business status. The award designates a company that is making a sustainable and ethical impact and which is striving for an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economy.

B-Corp is a global movement of businesses which support each other to improve and drive global change. To achieve B-Corp status the tire company’s business operations and environmental, social and governance strategy were assessed by an independent third-party to evaluate its commitment to meeting high standards. The assessment also verified Enso’s performance, accountability and transparency.

A dozen leading tire manufacturers – Apollo, Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear, Hankook, Kumho, Michelin, Nokian, Pirelli, SRI, Toyo and Yokohama – have been announced as the first companies to adopt natural rubber policies fully aligned with the framework of the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR).

“Together with our supply chain partners, these commitments will help improve the quality of life of the natural rubber cultivators, upgrade quality of natural rubber and minimize environmental impact,” explained Sooil Lee, president and CEO, Hankook.

As members of the GPSNR, all the companies’ policies must include eight major components: commitment to legal compliance, healthy functioning ecosystems, respecting human rights, community livelihoods, increased production efficiency, supply chain assessment and traceability, monitoring and reporting, and driving effective implementation of all these components.

Following a series of meetings, Continental has released the details of a planned shutdown of production at the company’s tire manufacturing plant in Aachen, Germany. As part of the plan, Continental has outlined how the company will continue to be socially responsible for its employees by offering individual training and further education offers at full pay.

Having previously decided to end production in 2021, the Aachen facility will continue tire manufacture with 1,200 employees until it is eventually phased out by the end of 2022. After this, 500 employees will remain at the tire facility through 2023.

Continental states that the discontinuation of production in the German plant is unavoidable due to massive structural over-capacity in the European tire market.

Pirelli returned to work on Monday, May 4, while protecting the health and safety of employees.

To protect employees from COVID-19, Pirelli is collaborating with the University of Milan to validate operating procedures and define healthcare protocols with screening for preventative purposes.

Restarting activities will happen gradually at the Settimo Torinese plant, with production levels at a reduced rate. At the Bollate plant, which focuses on the Velo business, only essential activities will restart in May with a few employees.

Facemasks will be produced in Bollate for employees and their families to eliminate the risk of shortages from third party suppliers.
