Michelin has said it will be ready to apply the Euro 7 regulation as early as 2028 for its latest products, and in 2030 for all of its automotive ranges.

“As Europe becomes aware of the need to support its industry without giving up on its environmental ambitions, the decisions on the Euro 7 tire testing method perfectly illustrate the choices it faces: either to support innovation and stringency for the benefit of the environment, or to accept compromises that undermine the standard and penalize responsible stakeholders,” said Florent Menegaux, chairman of Michelin.

In 2020, the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) assessment determined that the existing standards provided an ample margin of safety to protect public health and prevent an adverse environmental effect. However, on November 29, 2024, the EPA added a revised National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) ruling, adding emission limits for total hydrocarbons (THC) and filterable particulate matter to the existing rule.

This required tire manufacturing facilities to install and operate regenerative thermal oxidizers, which demand a significant input of natural gas to combust pollutants.

The highlighted priorities emphasize the need for ongoing collaboration to ensure the US tire manufacturing sector is well-prepared to tackle future challenges. These include the need to update antiquated regulations that impede innovation and the importance of collective efforts to progress solutions for intricate environmental issues.

“Tires support almost every facet of our mobile society and the members of USTMA urge Congress to promptly address several high-priority issues,” said Anne Forristall Luke, USTMA president and CEO.

This means that all of the company’s tires which are used on US roadways are manufactured in line with the strict technical requirements mandated by the US DOT.

Issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) agency of the US DOT, the certification denotes that multiple tire categories manufactured within the facilities are tested to DOT requirements, and subsequently comply with the applicable Federal Motor Vehicle safety standards of the USA. Accordingly, GRI’s tires will now feature the DOT code emboss on the sidewalls.

In recognition of the fact that all vehicles, regardless of their emissions, generate tire and brake particle emissions, the European Union’s new proposed framework will become the first worldwide standard to move beyond exhaust emissions. The Euro 7 rules will set out additional limits for particulate emissions generated by brakes, and rules for microplastics production due to tire wear.
“Together with our supply chain partners, these commitments will help improve the quality of life of the natural rubber cultivators, upgrade quality of natural rubber and minimize environmental impact,” explained Sooil Lee, president and CEO, Hankook.

As members of the GPSNR, all the companies’ policies must include eight major components: commitment to legal compliance, healthy functioning ecosystems, respecting human rights, community livelihoods, increased production efficiency, supply chain assessment and traceability, monitoring and reporting, and driving effective implementation of all these components.
