<p>This is a solid approach as it typically results in a model that can be shown to accurately represent the test conditions, while also being fast to solve and easy to use. The only issue is that while the resulting model can be solved at any load case, its accuracy can only be relied upon for load cases within the tire’s tested range.</p>

Most are closed source (or black box), meaning the program code behind them is not available to end users. This is understandable as the code can easily be licensed and its development paid for. Everyone’s got to make a living! This approach, however, makes it much harder to get the best out of the models – if you can’t see their internal workings, it’s harder to maximize their usefulness.</p>
<p>Other models, such as Magic Formula, are effectively open source, with the equations published in books and journal papers.</p>

Expanding on that, one of the single most challenging areas to model is the tread pattern. It’s also one of the most critical areas, as it affects the tire’s handling ability – the single most important performance aspect to get right.</p>
<p>Ultimately, cars are machines for moving stuff about, which requires the generation and control of lateral force – exactly what handling is. Other performance factors are important, but they come afterward. Good ride characteristics, for example, are important in making the driver more comfortable, but that’s less important than actually getting them where they’re going.</p>

Naturally, both sides want to protect their IP; however, this can cause problems when trying to get anything done. If an OEM wants a manufacturer to design a tire for a new car, the tire maker will invariably want more information on the new vehicle – something an OEM may be reluctant to divulge. Similarly, if an OEM asks for more detail on a compound used in a new tire, the tire maker may be wary of sharing too much proprietary information.</p>
