For over 70 years, tire and chassis system modeling has depended largely on indoor testing. However, these controlled environments fall short in replicating real-world conditions, especially on snow and ice, where indoor testing faces serious limitations. As the demand for realistic vehicle dynamics simulations grows, accurately capturing tire behavior in real-world settings remains a major challenge – primarily due to the difficulty of measuring forces and moments directly at the contact patch.

Te.Sense Bloom is fully compliant with FMVSS 110 and emerging EV stability test standards, and serves as a reusable tool to help OEMs and tire manufacturers optimize their test programs and reduce waste. The first US specification kit has been delivered to the Transportation Research Center in Ohio for initial evaluations.

Rapid tire deflation tests often involve driving a vehicle over special roadway cleats at defined speeds. With this method, tires are destructively punctured and destroyed by the cleats, and internal inflation pressure is quickly reduced to atmospheric pressure.

However, George Mavros, who led two sessions this year, observed a shift in the demographic of the learners. Compared with previous years, more engineers from tire manufacturers participated, recognizing the importance of the subject, while traditionally automotive OEM engineers – whose daily work is more related to tire modeling – have usually accounted for the majority of attendees.

The well-received course covered general principles of tire force generation for handling, ride and durability, as well as niche topics such as terramechanics.

The conference kicked off with a plenary session, where two dominant themes emerged across four presentations: sustainability and safety. As pressure mounts on the tire industry to adopt greener practices, safety remains closely intertwined with this transition.

Tony Robinson, founder of Tire Technology Expo, highlighted tire pressure monitoring systems as an area needing improvement. Noting their sensitivity, he remarked, “It’s a shame TPMS hasn’t got to the level of intellect we’d like to see.”

He emphasized the importance for future mobility of being able to gather external data from a vehicle’s surroundings, stating, “Ultimately it all boils down to safety.”

Current test methods and standards may not be comprehensive enough to get a full understanding of a given tire’s rolling resistance in the real world.

This information is important to know because alongside battery performance, tire rolling resistance at low temperatures has been highlighted as a factor that could significantly affect electric vehicle range – and therefore needs more analysis.

“Current rolling resistance test methods only focus on tire performance at an ambient temperature of 24°C (75°F) or 25°C (77°F), but real-world applications span a much broader range of operation,” noted Henry He, co-author of the whitepaper and general manager of Smithers’ materials science and engineering division in Suzhou, China.
