Snow Academy project

Luleå University of Technology initiates project to develop methods of measuring snow quality in order to improve preparation of test tracks

Led by Luleå University of Technology, Arctic Falls and three other vehicle test companies in Norrbotten will launch the Snow Academy project in early 2018.

The initiative aims to develop methods and systems for measurement of snow quality, based on the mechanical properties of the snow.

“To date, vehicle and tire testing companies have amassed extensive knowledge about snow. In order to fully use and understand this knowledge, the properties of snow, such as grain size, density and water content, need to be measurable,” explains Johan Casselgren, associate professor at Luleå University of Technology.

“Through combining measurements with practical knowledge, we can create better methods for preparation of test tracks in various weather conditions. Our goal is also to create measuring instruments that collect data in real time to show current testing conditions,” adds Arctic Falls CEO Jonas Jalar.

The project will run for at least three years and one of its working groups will also be focused on creating and maintaining a long-term research environment for snow, ice and a cold climate at Luleå University of Technology.
